Hans Herrmann raced this Porsche 550 in the fifth and final Carrera Panamericana in 1954. He will finish 3rd overall, but 1st in the under-1500 class. I found a few pictures of the actual car, and then at the bottom is the model.

Enjoy

that is a beauty , John ! I actually want this one but as you know , I´m stepping out a bit from collecting (but I should have this once I return)
how is the finish and the Details on this one , cause AUTOart is still asking much for those ?

Thanks. This is a top notch model. I am happy this is in that $135 range from AUTOart, which is about as cheap as it gets from them. I was really scared to by this one. I was afraid that is would not set itself far from the Maisto. But, the Maisto is not close. The wheels are very well done; has depth and detail that should be there. The paint and decals are perfect. The "Mexico 55" plate on the front/rear is not a sticker, but its own peice. The spare tire strap is a nice material, and the same goes for the boot.

It is a good model, and I feel that the price is about right...compared to other models for the price. And it looks great next to my Minichamps Porsche 904 in silver race livery. Sexy pair.

Thanks for posting. I had the same reservations about it. I got rid of my Maisto 550 as it was so awful. But this one looks like a peach.  No Porsche collection can possibly be complete without a nice 550.

Thanks buddy. I live the lines, and those rear fenders are great. As for the lighting...post production of the pictures helps a lot. They started up pretty dark.

It must have seemed like a spaceship in Mexico back in '55. Really nice shots of the model, thanks for posting.

Thanks. Looking at the other cars that raced, this sure was a space ship. With the media and internet, it does not seem like the days of discovering a car in person is long gone. When I was a kid riding my bike around town, I came upon a Supra and had NO idea what it was. It was georgeous though. I fell in love. But, then I saw her get whored out in the late 90s with the whole tuner scene. I can no longer look at her the same.

Nice add man! I'm planning on this getting this sometime this year. My Porsche collection feels pretty empty without having a 550 Spyder in there.

Gotta get it. For the "small" AUTOart price, it does not get much better.

Wow, terrific shoot and great way to get in the heritage mood by showing those old pics. It's a shame those races aren't quite as friendly anymore.

If it's not die-cast, it won't have a crumple zone

Most definitely! I've seen a handful of these popping up here on DX lately, and I love stopping to glance at each one. A great addition to any collection! :occasion14:

These type of races are done, or at least until Death Race 2000 becomes a reality.
