Hello DX’ers,

Ever hear of the saying “you get what you pay for”?

That’s exactly the case here. About a week ago, I won a BMW E93 Space Grey 3-Series Convertible Dealer Edition for only $37+ shipping in supposedly NIB condition.

I got it today. From the moment my postman dropped it off, I was shocked. I saw a grey box on my porch and knew that it was the model. But I thought, how does the seller ship the model in such a small box?

When I picked it up, I knew it was a dealer edition box. I thought the dealer editions have Styrofoam cases on the inside so the model is well protected, and thought about tossing the box in the trash as the model was only $37 anyway. I opened it up and didn’t see a Styrofoam case. Instead, I saw a couple pieces of mashed up bubble wrap, paper and packing peanuts.

I knew for sure the model was damaged and indeed, it was. The driver side mirror is bent downwards and the convertible top is jammed. There was a set of instructions in the box on how to operate the top, and I have followed them, but still could not get the convertible top up with a reasonable amount of force.

Any help would be appreciated. :bawling:

That's what I thought. I have a minor suspicion that the seller threw out the Styrofoam because she/he thought the clumps of paper/bubble wrap/foam offered "more protection".

Yeah, the dealer box isn't corrugated or anything. Basically a piece of cardstock folded up and put in the mail. I'm not going to keep it unless the seller gives me a major discount and I can use it for parts. It was a beautiful model too. I think the seller mainly sells clothing. So she/he packed it like a shirt.

Update: By some miracle, I got the roof to work. The front window frame is not bent and just looks wonky. I messaged the seller and she told me to send some pics. Which I'm taking right now. I think I'm just going to keep the model, fix it and sell it for profit.

I had the same situation when I bought M6 in blue from local guy..
He wrote my addres on the BMW box ( Dealer's one ), putted Styrofoam out ( To save on shipping! ) and just wrapped model with bubbles..

The next day I got the model and ofcourse it was damadged.. Sold it for a parts and make a profit ;)

Update: I stole a foam insert from an empty Kyosho box I had (3-Series Coupe) and put the foam into the box of this model. I then took the postage label and tape off the box. Not perfect, but it looks half decent. I'm going to fix the mirror and glue another loose part and list it on eBay.

Save on shipping? I would imagine that the difference in weight would be negligible between the foam and bubbles. This still isn't the worst packging job I've seen though. I've seen a lot worse.

Yeah.. That was what he said.. Shipping was really cheap. But with mint box the price of the shipping would be bigger for 1€ max. lol..
One seller once send me Tamiya plastic kit in 2 shopping bags ( Really thick shopping bags ). Luckily the model came without damadge hah :)

Update: Sent the seller some pics. She said she couldn't see any of the things I pointed out but said I could get a refund if I send it back. I think I'm just going to make some $$$ of the model and forget about all this.

If you've got the roof to work etc you may as well keep it, or flip it.

Yeah, I'm listing it this weekend on eBay. I also have a E92 Space Grey Coupe, so it dosen't make a lot of sense to have an E93 Space Grey convertible sitting next to it.

That makes perfect sense to me. I like to have the matching coupe and covertible. It makes for a great display.

Wow, those look great. The coupe and convertible 330i's aren't really matching, but they are supposedly the same color (Space Grey). For some reason, the convertible is noticeably lighter than the coupe. But your photo makes me sort of want to keep the convertible. Thanks for the photo!
