Please can anyone tell me which one(s) are worth getting? Are there any particular drivers to watch for ?

I enjoyed looking at these as well. I'd probably just go for the prettiest livery.
I mod stuff

If you look at the top row of these shelves, I've got a few of them (sorry about the photo quality).

Grainy video of my collection, here, as well.

Actually a mix between GMP, Action, and a company called R&R, who all made 1/18 scale winged sprinters, plus there are non-winged versions, and some that are called "midgets", due to their size and engine.  Pretty decent detail on them, wings and engine covers are removable.  I collected many of them simply for the livery.

All told (as I have some others that are displayed based on either livery - Pennzoil cars are nice; or driver - Tony Stewart is representent in four or five), I probably have forty of them on display (even made a custom livery of my own).

There is a local dirt quarter-mile oval where a touring series, American Sprint Car Association ( ASCA), appear about four times a year, and I always try to make at least one of them.  They are beasts, and so much fun to watch.  The drivers are ballet dancers in these things, carefully balancing the steering and throttle, and the car is never pointed straight ahead.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Damn!! I loved the video, they just kept going & going!

I was looking at GMP, but some sellers on eBay are saying R&R GMP, is that correct ? or are they just putting both names down to get more exposure?
Which maker would you say has the nicest detail ? Action is Minichamps / PMA yeah ?

F**k you Photobucket.

From what I understand, R&R bought the GMP molds, and continued to produce more liveries on identical models.  I have them side by side, and cannot tell the difference.  The Action's, however, are unique to themselves, the primary difference being that the main wing on an Action is diecast, it is plastic on the R&R/GMP's, but even displayed side by side, Action to GMP/R&R, they are all very well scaled.

I don't think any of them are being made any more, as most of the liveries I see these days are already among my collection, so they can get pricey.

If you find any that won't ship International, let me know, and I'll help you out.  I've repackaged stuff for a bunch of other folks here.

Thanks, I did not know that the GMP ones etc had plastic wings on them, I'd have expected metal throughout.

I think I'll choose one I like the most & go from there. Out of interest do both makers have removable wings & bodies ?

I might take you up on the offer if a seller won't ship to me here.

Ok so I've bought the Donny Schatz 2014 one by R&R. It was flying off the shelves so I grabbed one. I still like the car I showed above, so who knows maybe that one will join the party too.

You also can't go wrong with such a claasic sponsor, and a driver that has almost dominated the last decade.

I made this video about these models.

1/18 Winged Sprinters

And if you think there is only one STP, then the video's message is just a start.

This is the Andy Hillenberg version.

The three STP's I have in my collection.

Donny Schatz, again.

Reverse livery, too.

And some detail from a GMP/R&R.

Go for it!

But make room on your shelves.

This one's not arrived yet. But I want a couple more, can anyone recommend any sellers to get them from ? The sellers on eBay want around $50 to ship, but I'd still have duties on top of that! :gaah:

Craig, my local diecast shop used to have a small section for these GMP Sprint cars.  They may still have some.  I know they used to ship to Great Britain, so they might be able to help you out.  I don't know if the list on their website is correct or not.  Jut e-mail them, and see what other models and brands they have.  www.gearheadsindy.com

I used to race these real cars, and I personally boycott al of GMP's 1/18 sprint cars.  I much prefer Action/Lionel 1/24 Xtreme Series Sprint cars.  They are a much more realistic and accurate model of  a modern sprint car.  I even have some pictures of one of my Steve Kinser Action ones on this website.

It's really cool that you used to race them! Were you any good ?
The one I got was by RR Designs (or something) 1/24 scale are a bit too small for me. I only really do 1/18 I really would like to get my hands on a few more  :hope:

Craig he had to be good to race them, you do not just get in a Sprint car and race. you work your way up through some more "normal" racers like  midgets, or something. Full blown sprint cars like these are insane and very very fast! You pretty much drive with the throttle, most sprint cars do not even have brakes for all four wheels. So that throws a wrench in things. The motor is putting down 750 or more horsepower and you never have the steering  wheel straight. Most of the "control" of the car is with the throttle and there is no transmission, you are either in gear or not! Anyone who races these things has more talent IMO than a current Nascar Cup series driver.

I could never drive an F1 car anywhere near the level of Seb or Lewis but after an hour or 2 I could at least turn in some lap times that come within 30 seconds of what they are capablle of. If I tried to drive a sprint car I would just spin it out all day and probaby never complete a lap. They are crazy buggers to say the least. I would like to see the ones you have bought, I think it is super cool you have an interest in them. Too watch them race is total entertainment you cannot even keep up, you need extra eyes!
