Looking at starting a historic racing collection (70s and 80s) and I was hoping to check out the classifieds on this site. Is it worth it or does everyone just use ebay?

that depends. you might find a bigger selection on ebay, but it is possible to find stuff here.

but to use the classifieds, you would have to be an established member.

I have bought numerous models through DX Classifieds successfully. You are buying from fellow collectors who understand the need to package items carefully. Additionally there is a comradre between established members that extends beyond it being a mere transaction.

G'day mate and welcome to DX.

As has already been said, you'll find a much larger choice of models on eBay.

When you say "historic racing" from the '70s-'80s are you talking Aussie racing a 'la Bathurst/ATCC or international historics like Le Mans, Indy etc? This is an international group so you're unlikely to find a lot of Aussie cars for sale here. But having said that I've not looked for them myself and there are quite a few of us (Aussies) on this site.

Good luck on whatever it is you decide to go for mate. The options are massive.

Cheers
Ray

Welcome aboard. The great thing you will learn is that being a collector here in Australia will cost you big $ in postage and very limited local supplies of many models (unless you are specifically chasing Aus muscle cars).  Welcome to the hobby :)

Thanks All,

Ray I'm into mostly Le Mans cars from the 70s and 80s and European road cars from the 60s and 70s.

I've narrowed a starter list down to mostly Porsche's and I think I might try to get them in 1/12. As long as I can get them with plenty of detail and opening would be a bonus but I'm not set on opening them.

The List :):
1964 Porsche 911
Porsche 356a

Maclaren F1 in Silver
Porsche 917 1970 Attwood/Hermann #23
Porsche 962 Rothmans

Does anyone know of a high(ish) detail opening 1/12 Porsche 917 or where its appropriate to ask in here? Ive tried searching in here but most of the info is about the 1/18s or talks about the model being 'good' for a 1/12.

Hi, the only one from your 1/12 list that is opening is the McLaren F1 as the others are sealed resin models and what a Great model the F1 is although prices are rising like the 1/18 scale models. Have a look in my thread if you want to see 1/12 as this is my main collecting scale,i take plenty of photos so they should give you a good idea of what you may want to buy. If there was any problems with any certain model i say it so hope it will give you some thoughts of which 1/12 models you want, enjoy the buying journey too. :twocents: :yahoo: :occasion14: :danke:

You're too late drivinghermad :) I went through all you photos over the last two days.  Amazing stuff, the red Maclaren was a highlight, I even talked endlessly to my partner (maybe in reference to your name) about how much I thought it cost.

I would love to start off the collection with a 1960s 911 maybe the TSM in Ivory not that I can find one for sale. I'm happy to build a 1/12 kit (maybe something from Hiro) if thats gets me engine details.
