It's true no Texas Twister, just the Twister, here the history of this special model :

The Twister Special had a very interesting beginning. Late in the 1969 production year American Raceways, Inc. (ARI) contacted the Ford Motor Corporation regarding the production of pace cars for the race tracks in their organization. Ford eagerly obliged by designing a unique 1970 Mach 1 Mustang. Each car's detailing was color coordinated to match ARI's various race tracks. Unfortunately, the ARI went bankrupt and the cars were never delivered.

Fortunately for Ford, a special project was underway in Kansas City Missouri. People at the district sales office approached Ford about producing a flashy, high performance, promotional car for their "Total Performance Day" which would be held Friday, Nov. 7, 1969. Now, Ford had the opportunity to market the vehicles originally manufactured for ARI. Fords shipped 96 Mach I Mustangs and 90 Torino Cobras to Kansas City. They contracted with a detailing firm there to remove the ARI logos and replace them with the Mach I logo, Ford script, and the Twister Special logo.

On the morning of Nov. 7th, the assembly of Kansas City district dealers converged. Seminars and performances were given promoting Ford's high perforamce cars and parts. The highlight of the day came in the afternoon when the dealers were treated to a display commemorating the event - 90 vermilion Torino Cobras, and 96 GRABBER ORANGE MACH I's - THE TWISTER SPECIAL!!

Good Google work!  :giggle but unfortunately, the second paragraph is all wrong. The myth that ARI Pace cars were converted is all wrong. The Twisters were a separate project that utilized some of the design work of the ARI cars. The ARI were available in other colors, so they could not had been converted to Twisters.

Go here for some more info:
http://www.twisterspecialregistry.com/

I know that all Twisters were supposed to be identical until Ford figured out that they did not have enough 428s and they used the newly released 351Cs. They wanted performance and not much flash. These cars were a single order from the Sales District and not each an individual order like most cars were.
Every picture that I have seen and every 1:1, even an original owner one, had the front and rear spoiler, the rear slats and Magnum wheels. Does that make the HW61 model wrong as it lack the spoilers/slats and it has the FoMoCo caps?  :confused

Here is a picture of the ARI cars:

Where is it written that the more diecast $$$ equals a better diecast?

I took this photo in 2006 at the Granby auto show, it can be a clone, I'm not sure :

For this model I think I will try to buy the ERTL old release, I dont like the wheels and the fact that the rear spoiler is missing on the Highway 61 model.

Well, isn't this interesting? I can't find a single pic of a '70 Twister Special that doesn't have the chrome wheels and a spoiler. Is this Highway 61 model even authentic?

Photos look magnificent...and I'm no Chevy fan! Gosh, I love the plain, stripeless beauty of a solid-color car body in all it's factory-designed style!

Dog dishes, steelies, wingless, stripeless, scoopless and minimums of all else (except power and contours).

I love the overdone, loaded-to-the-gills, purely American cars, too, like a Superbird (Beep-Beep!).

But the plain-janes just knock me for a loop. Naked aggression. Like a good steak without the ketchup (which my wife puts on it- arrgh)!

HEY- ya suppose Highway 61 would sell me a couple of those door mirrors?? I need at least one, but several would be cool, too.

Highway 61
50719 08 Dodge Challenger SRT8 - Black Crystal Pearl - June 09
50722 Dodge Challenger Concept Super Stock Drag Car - Black - May 09
50726 1971 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe - Alpine White - March 09

Shah-wing and all pre-ordered.  :3tens:

I must be mentally challenged because I can't understand why the 'plain janes' don't get made more often. I so hope the Gran Coupe is a hit (and that they don't over-stuff it with options that are contrary to what the Gran Coupe normally was.

I love that ERTL took the Starsky Gran Torino and downgraded it into a basic driver in silver, red, blue...great stuff.

I'd love them to start branching into the "less-worshiped" versions of even the cars they already have molds for. Where are the 1973 Barracudas and 1974 Rallye Challengers? Where's my '71 Swinger slant six? Where's the "Gold Duster"? Let's see some 318-2v engines. And some straight-six Novas and such.

Tan and Brown are your friend, folks! Pea green is oh so 1960s.

Let's get frugal!!  :giggle
