I totally agree with you on the Continental GT. Yes, Minichamps does nice Bentleys but those (as the Bugattis, for example) are terribly overrated and definitely not worth 200€! I mean, just look at their stupid insistence in making the models with sealed grilles... I totally don't get it. Yes, 60 - 70€ is a good value (on par with a GTAutos or an old Hot Wheels Elite, for example) but just insane on their MSRP!

But then again, it's our fault: if no one bought them at those prices, they'd have no choice but to lower their prices. Just like those overrated sealed models so fashionable nowadays...

I agree on all points. In my country we have a saying which roughly translated means "It's not the one who's eating the cake who's crazy, but the one who gives it to him". So, as long as people pay big money for lower quality, the companies will do it.

Happily there's some hope, since those Bentleys are now so severely discounted and yet the STILL can't sell fast, lol.

Since the top priority of my collection has always been having fun, lately I've been keen to diversify it a bit. Supercar and hypercar models are becoming more and more expensive, less diecast, more sealed and so on.

Meanwhile I also like models of more unusual vehicles, but such are even rarer. So, what to do, but to make them myself, lol. Well, I am no Rob, but I am kinda pleased with the result.

My new 1:18 Mereces Actros Armored Truck is ready :yahoo:It's carboard (and a bit of wood, lol) and glue, so it can be called a "hybrid composite scale interpretation" :giggle:

About the truck: Finding information about this truck is quite a challenge. Our Central Bank here has several of them and that's all I knew at first, lol. It's starts its life as an Actros 1831 and is then armored and modified with unknown... things. These trucks are also often very "angry", especially the convoy police vehicles which travel with them :giggle:

So, thanks to a few pics I found online, an old brochure about the 1831 and just looking at the trucks as they whizz around the city I got to work. The process was similar as with my Iveco Gendarmerie truck I did last year - starting from complete scratch and using the basic measurements I found as a guide to draw a sketch and then turn that sketch into the model. The trucks all have different features and parts, so I just chose a clean look with no too much add-ons to be easier to make.

The end result is below. It's about 200 parts, as close to 1:18 as possible (+/- 1-5mm) and far from "photorealistic". But It does cover the top priority - having fun and having good shelf presence. And it's quite big.. So big it won't fit between most of my shelves :bawling: :giggle: See for yourself:

The real one:

While the real one uses Volvos as convy cars, mine gets a bit more special treatment :giggle:

Posted Image

Strangely, it's lighter than the Iveco, for some reason... I guess this cardboard is just a tad bit thinner...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

As you can see, it lacks the signs, but I fear stickers will look bad, so I prefer to keep it sign-free. There's also no Mercedes emblem at the front, but I will look for a small enough one to add it eventually.

I was thinking of making the back opening, so that I could use the plenty of storage space, but the cardboard won't like that, lol. Maybe one day I will finally get my hands on enough styrene and build it again from a stronger material, lol.

And as for just how big it is... well:

You built that from scratch, by yourself? I think that looks fantastic, I love it! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

I used to build my own cardboard models when I was a kid back in the 80's. Don't know why I stopped, I had a lot of fun making them and they would cost close to nothing.

Thanks, cwbs :yahoo:

Yes, I made both trucks in the pics above. Both cost me less than $5 as I just use cardboard I have laying around (those shipping boxes my diecasts come in, are quite handy) and get some basic supplies only.

I've too made a few other cardboard models over the years. I currently have 6 carboard city trams, all in 1:24 scale, Those two above are my first 1:18 cardboard models and my first cardboard vehicles. Well, technically, years ago I made a small, boxy car and I still have it, but it's what you would expect a kid to do :yahoo:

Oh, yes, saw that thread, the guy is incredibly skilled. I was amazed how quickly and easily he cut new pieces to shape :omg: Funnily enough, I was already planning to do my truck and when I saw him, I decided to start working on it :yahoo:I have a long, long way to go until I reach his level, but who knows, maybe some day

Took my Ford GT on a quick trip. Quite the car for sure, has powerful presence :drool5: Despite being a regular ol' Maisto, they have done a fine job replicating the vibe of the car :eusa_clap: Add a few details on the model and you have a looker :drool5:

Oh, yes, it's definitely one of Maisto's better paints. It's very smooth and shiny :eusa_clap:

Thanks :occasion14: In fairness, I have touched it up a little. This is the regular edition not the one in the clamshell box, so I added the side windows and painted the A-pillars black. But that's about it for the exterior. What the pics hide well is the solid grilles, lol. Still, they are well detailed, just solid.. kinda like the Minichamps Bentley GT.. Only a whole lot cheaper than it :yahoo: I quite like how the doors have a nice "click" in the fully open position and holds them up for posing. Definitely a budget model done right :yahoo:

This is hands down one of the best budget models ever made.

It is not a coincidence that you noticed the excellent paint job - I have the special edition in dark red/burgundy, and Maisto absolutely nailed this lovely color.

Yep, it's good that in the days of collectors getting more and more disappointed by big name model makers, Maisto and BBurago (basically the same company) are trying to up their game a bit. The Ford GT, the Chiron, even the Urus (despite it being a 1:20 it still has great stance and paint). Already hoping that they will do the same with the Divo :drool5:

What a deadly combo! Had the chance to drive the new M5 and M850 back to back at a BMW driving event and they are both beasts. How do you like the 850? I have the M5 and love it but can't pull the trigger on the 8 Series due to the sealed trunk.

Overall it's a decent model, but if you can get it for less than the retail price of 120 euros. That is a bit much for it. If you manage to snag one or 80 euros though, that's a much better and realistic price for it. The paint, while not my favorite color, is quite impressive with the sparkles and overall quality. The sealed trunk is definitely a minus as is the detail on the taillights, althogh they might be fixable with some blackwash or something to that effect.

You can see more of both models in a quick-review form here: https://www.diecastx...s/#entry4199937
