GT Autos is a relatively new brand, and being the 'High-End' version of Welly, how does it stand up against established brands such as Minichamps?
The Mercedes SLS is a great model for this comparison, as both companies produce it.

My scoring system:
The model with better features would gain a point, and lose points if it is a complete letdown.
If the features on both models are comparable, a point would be awarded to both.

This is my first time doing a comparison, constructive feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated! :occasion14:
So, then, let's start.
The GT Autos is in white, and the Minichamps is a Dealer Edition in Black.

Box:
Posted Image
Posted ImagePosted Image
Posted Image

Nothing much to compare here, since each maker has different packaging styles.

Stuff inside the box:
The GT Autos (GTA) SLS has a door-opener tool inside the box, similiar to those found in Kyosho boxes.
Posted Image

The Minichamps' Dealer Box has a small screwdriver branded with the Minichamps logo on it.
Posted Image

Each box contains something which would help with the removal / opening of the model. One point for both models.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 1
Minichamps: 1

Now, moving on to the model itself:
Front
Posted ImagePosted Image

The GTA definitely has the edge here, with its' perforated front grille.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 2
Minichamps: 1

Side/Stance
Posted ImagePosted Image

Both models seem pretty good, but the Minichamps seems better to me, as the GTA has a stupidly tall rear ride height.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 2
Minichamps: 2

Rear
Posted Image
Posted Image

The centre reverse light below the rear license plate holder is transparent on the 1:1, which is correct on the GTA.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 3
Minichamps: 2

Interior
There are two components to this section, mainly the doors and the interior.
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

The interiors of both models are impressive, but the carbon fiber trimming in the GTA seems a little too oversized. Hence, the Minichamps wins here.

The doors of the SLS makes it unique, and the Minichamps' doors can stay up even though I have opened and closed in multiple times.
The doors on the GTA though... It's utter and complete :icon_bs: . I took pictures of both models an hour after I had received the GTA, and they couldn't stand fully when I opened it the second time, and I had to prop up the door with my finger and a skewer for the shots above. The door hinges felt soft and did not have any resistance at all.
-1 for the GTA here...

Current Score:
GT Autos: 1
Minichamps: 3

Engine Bay + Hood
Posted ImagePosted Image

As you can see in the images above, I had to use something to prop up the hood of the Minichamps. It was so heavy ,and I almost cracked the windshield when I flipped the model upside down to get the hood open.
The GTA, on the other hand, stays up just fine.

The GTA's engine bay has more depth compared to the Minichamps, which is pretty nice.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 3
Minichamps: 3

Exterior
There are quite a few components to this section, namely the mirrors, badging and paintwork / general quality control.

Mirrors
Posted ImagePosted Image

The GTA's mirrors look cheap and plasticky, and the mold lines aren't really helping. The Minichamps' looks superb. Winner is clear here.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 3
Minichamps: 4

Badging

Rear
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Front
Posted ImagePosted Image

Sides
Posted ImagePosted Image

Rear: The "SLS" and "AMG" badges are pretty close.
Front: The front badge is a letdown on the GTA. It was peeling when I took it out of the box for the first time, and it disintegrated even more after i ran my finger over it. The Minichamps' is fine, still in the same condition as it was when I first bought it back in 2010.
Sides: Again, it's pretty close.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 5
Minichamps: 7

The rest of the categories that I had planned out don't really have pictures.

Weight
The GTA doesn't feel that heavy, but not that light either. The model can be rolled about easily.
The Minichamps is as heavy as a brick, and it takes quite some effort to roll it about.

As I am a person who likes to play with my models, the GTA wins here.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 6
Minichamps: 7

Paint Quality
The paint quality of the Minichamps is far superior to the GTA, which has quite a few rough spots and scratches.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 6
Minichamps: 8

General Quality Control
As seen from all the pictures above, the Minichamps has much better quality control compared to the GTA, with less mould lines, defective badging, and paint issues.

Current Score:
GT Autos: 6
Minichamps: 9

Price
I paid about 140 - 150 Singapore Dollars for the Minichamps back then, and the GT Autos cost me only 90 Singapore Dollars.
For the level of detail that the GTA offers, it is pretty value-for-money despite its' flaws.

Final Score:
GT Autos: 7
Minichamps: 9

Conclusion:
Both the Minichamps and the GT Autos has their own strengths and weaknesses. If you like great build quality and a fantastic display piece, the Minichamps is for you. However, if you are one who prefers cheaper and still pretty decent models, go GTA. Furthermore, the white GTA is a great alternative to the Minichamps Museum Edition SLS in white (Limited to 500), which sells for some crazy money online.

Here are some shots of the models that were unused in the comparison:
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Thanks for taking the time to look through this comparison, and have a very Merry Christmas! :occasion14:

Great review, Thanks! I would go with the minichamps, prefer the build quality for sure.

Just looking at your comparison pics, the Minichamps version is streets ahead in overall finish. As is often the case hwoever, I'm sure the GTA version would still look great alongside other models in a collection. I have a couple of Welly and FX Lamborghini 1/18 cars and they look very nice as part of my collection among their AutoArt and Kyosho brethren.

I was thinking of adding the non monichamps, but it is very rough around the edges. And with the badges and lights that are not so great, I think it is an easy win for the Minichamps. The interior on the Minichamps looks much better and I like the contrasting colors. But, for the other one, I like the optional wheels. That is a very cool touch.

Yeah, the build quality for the Minichamps is much better. More colors to choose from as well :)

Indeed, I have a Welly Conti SS and it is great. Perhaps an upgrade to the FX SS is due soon... :P

Agreed, the optional wheels are very nice. They are also removable, I believe...

Thanks for this comparison :) but i think you forgot to rate the wheels size/proportion... and the disc brake, ... i think GTA is better, the minichamps wheels are too big and fat... this is the problem on some minichamps models, like the SLR McLaren Roadster, SLR Stirling Moss etc. And the disc brake on GTA i think it's better too... so for me + 2 point for GTA hehe. And what about the undercarriage too... and the overall grille mesh her and there... hehe Thanks :)

Very nice comparison you have there. I must say that exterior on the GT looks better than the PMA, but everything else seems to be better on the PMA.

Minichamps looks better, but it's a shame that the grills are not perforated...

True, although it is possible to add perforated grilles onto the Minichamps. I believe raidou did it, the thread is somewhere around here :wavetowel2:

Might I add your calculation in the final score isn't correct? Check your calculations for the GTautos version again :-) You ranked it one point to high...

Furthermore, is this white metallic as the PMA Museum edition is?

The calculation for the final score seems correct to me, maybe you were referring to the badging section of the review, where there were 3 sub-categories.
The GTA's shade of white is nowhere close to the Museum Edition's, but it's still an alternative if you're looking for a white SLS without breaking the bank :occasion14:

Great comparo.  The GT Auto would be good enough for me & still a pretty hefty upgrade from the Maisto (which isn't bad for a budget model).

Thanks! The Maisto is pretty good for a 'budget' model, considering that it has the pop-up spoiler that the higher-end brands don't have.

Nice work! I have the Minichamps, but heard good things about the GT. With your review I can see that the Minichamps is far better. The only thing I consider better on the GT is the fact that it has perforated grills, which was my biggest disappointment with the Minichamps, even before the GT was released...

Perforated grilles really do make or break a model, perfect examples would be the Minichamps Merc SL65 Black Series / Ford Focus RS.
