Airbrushing VMS Varnish HD Gloss Clear Coat

Hi
I'm new to airbrushing so please bear with me! I stripped the paint from a Corgi Classics diecast model then applied 3 coats of Halfords acrylic primer after cleaning in soapy water. I gently sanded the primer then applied 3 coats of Vallejo Premium acrylic red paint via airbrush. I'm currently trying to airbrush clear coat gloss onto the red paint in readiness for decals. The airbrush is definitely spraying but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the paint. I was (perhaps naively) expecting a nice shiny gloss finish to the paint but no such luck. It's almost as if the clear coat is being absorbed by the red paint. I'm spraying the clear coat without thinner at a psi of 30 using a 0.5mm needle. Can anyone help please?

Wait what.

is the clear level going down in the airbrush cup as you spray? Do you see the spray coming out?
Hi. Yes the spray is coming out and the cup empties. I'm using a display4top spray booth.
Are you building up the wetness of the coats? Like the usual routine of light coat followed by 2-3 full wet coats?
That might be where I'm going wrong. So is it 1 light coat followed by several wet coats?

I guess it depends on the manufacturer's recommendation. Splash paints' 2K clear goes like this: 1st coat - medium wet, 10 mins flash off, 2nd coat wet - 10 mins flash off, 3rd wet coat
I'll give this a try. Thank you very much for your help.
