DX outage...

DX was down and out for a great portion of the day today(8/24).

DX runs on three servers, one of which is dedicated(the brain of the three), and wouldn't you know it, that is the one that went south.

Well after a brief discussion with the host about moving everything to a new server while I awaited for repairs, it was determined that would not be feasible. The length of time involved in downloading the database twice for a move to and back would yield the same time as if I was to await a complete new server to replace the bad one. So the decision was made to leave the forums/site off line while they made the repairs to the server.

As we post a lot here and from past experiences, I have learned to back up all information as losing posts isn't a pleasant experience. DX is backed up hourly which is great, otherwise everything would have been reset to last night midnight :scared

I got a little frustrated after about six hours as my other sites were working fine, go figure.

Well I did manage to get some work done during all of this. So thats the silver lining in this storm.

Well new hardware is in place and all should be fine now, fingers and toes crossed.

Thanks

Hats off to you Darrick!! :cheers :cheers Your dedication to keeping this place running like a well-oiled machine is amazing. As my work involves working with folks who need to keep a real-time system running, I've got a small taste of what problem solving and trouble shooting with servers and communications can be like.

It's pretty mind boggling to me that the forum is backed up hourly too! That must be a lot of data that gets archived on a daily basis.

Don't burn too much midnight oil in getting things all sorted out. Have fun & good luck!

OT: Is Flat6rob still helping out?

p.s. I notice that sometimes, I see "page not found" and it's not until I refresh the page a few times that it displays properly. Is there an issue with the server being overworked and on my PC, things timing-out? :confused

Felix,

I talked to Rob today as he houses his sites on my servers and he is doing fine. He helps me out on any major builds that need to be done in return of housing his sites.

He did ask me if Luciano needed his boots for stomping :lol

"The page not found" can be a number of reasons. I created some custom error pages for this that state "Please contact webmaster for problems" (or to some effect). If your not getting the later, then I'm not sure what it could be.

WTG, Darrick and team!!! :nicejob :nicejob :nicejob

Glad to see DX is back, stronger than before! :danbanna
My misake...the error message in the window is "The page cannot be displayed". On the top of the IE window, it says "Cannot find server". As of 12:37 a.m. (Toronto time), displaying pages are hit & miss for me.

I am on at that time and I haven't had any probelms during that time frame :confused

I will check the error logs and see if I see anything.
G
Nothing in the logs right now, I'll check once more at the top of the hour.
G
Phew...I was beginning to get worried!

Can't beat your dedication, Darrick!

I suppose that the one benefit of us Brits / Europeans, is that our 'day' is your 'night'
I for one never noticed any difference :nicejob
Since I couldn't log one yesterday, I actually got a lot of work done and now I have some free time today to go do some diecast hunting. :giggle

I am glad everything is back to normal. Thank you Darrick!
DX,
You are the man!!! I believe that everyone here appreciates all the work that you put into making this the BEST collectors forum! Thanks for giving us our sanctuary (or 'fix' as it might be in most cases). You have brought a lot of people together that would have not otherwise have met.

Thanks again for all you do to keep the site up and running!

:thanks

I'm glad yo guys are back to be online with DX as I was suffering some withdrawals myself.

The server that house the pics was still up and running, so I did manage to look at all the pics that were posted :giggle

Sure is a lot of them. :cheers

As for my part in getting everything going, I played the role of the nagging admin inquiring about updates as the host did all the work.
