E-Bay alternative sales and auction sites?

Since it looks like there is no realistic international alternative to e-bay, that is where I need to go to sell some stuff.
Can anyone give me advice on the pitfalls to be wary of?
It's been quite some time since I sold anything (at least ten years), so I'm a bit rusty.....
Buy your boxes in advance. 16x8x8 inches will suffice. Weigh the package. Make sure you use the actual postage costs instead of an arbitrary number you come up with, as it'll most likely be higher and put people off. You can do a buy it now (takes much longer to sell) or a buy it now with a best offer (a bit quicker). 7 day auction is your best bet. Don't forget you lose 13-14% between ebay and paypal fees, not to mention the boxes. The postage fee doesn't really account for those. Start the auction at a good time, on a good day, when all your buyers are awake and are able to bid. Take into account the local time in the countries you ship to. Go into your settings and feel free to restrict buyers from as many countries as you like - which ones is up to you. Some are more "fishy" than others lol. Make sure the listing is visible internationally. Send with a tracked method unless the buyer seems trustworthy. Sometimes the measurement and weight units are messed up and the wrong shipping price is displayed as a result - be mindful of that. Always proofread. Include as many pics as possible. Make it look like the model is in the box. Show all papers etc. Don't start the auction with too low of a starting price cause sometimes you barely get any bidders and a model you paid $100 for will go for $25, and it hurts. That's about all I can think of. Oh ship only to the address specified by Paypal!

Not sure if you get it in Italy but I only list when there is a ÂŁ1 or ÂŁ3 maximum fees offer, otherwise you'll lose so much of your models value in fees!
Except he lives in Ireland

Indeed!
Thanks all for the advice, I now need to try and decipher the postage costs at my local general post office!
I will need to find out about the special listing fees option - how long do they last?

Honestly go to the post website and print your labels from there. It's SO much faster than filling in the papers at the post office.
