Please take a look at the photos. As you can see, there's an "clear outline" on the decorations on the model. Are these indications of decals?

Gary, if it has an outline, it's a decal, if not, it's a tampo. Another tell-tale if the graphic has more then one color: if there's one color over the other, if it's a decal the transition from one color to the other is totally smooth. On a tampo you can feel the edge of the paint when you pass your finger over it.

Sometimes model manufactuer painted the colour scheme on the model then apply clear decals on top. So I would have to say it's probably half and half, because larger decal sheets are very hard to place on curves.

Does anyone have a preference, decals or tampos.

I have seen some really nice decals, but I think I prefer the tampos, providing they are applied nicely.

About the Skyline - Looks to me like 'clear coated decals'.

Those that collect Tamiya Finished 1/12 motorbikes know what I'm talking about.

thanks for all the feedback guys! :cheers

I now have a better understanding of nut... I mean decals... and tampoes too! :giggle

I'm gonna have to say the JGTC skylines have tampoes and decals. The decal parts include parts of the hood, parts of the top, and a bit of the sides. The rest seem to be painted, or tampoed.

Thanks again! :happy

Thanks LUW, I've also been having problems about being sure of the difference. Also, it would seem that decals could not be placed on 3D curves without wrinkling? But I guess just the fact that we're having this conversation is testimony as to how much decals have improved in recent years. I hope their ageing problems have also improved ( and I hope mine have also! :giggle ).
