While I enjoyed reading Jeff's (JSB33's) histories of the Ford GT40 variants with photos of his models, I wanted to add what I could to flesh out some of the details but have no desire to hijack his thread.

So I tracked down the links to photo-histories that I've done in this thread of factory Fords along with my deeply researched photos of the 1:1s with a few of my models. These links make it easier than having to go through my whole collection thread hoping to find something. Hope some of you check these out (again)!

Watching some of my fellow DXers posting updates to their collection made me realize that the last time I added any models to mine was in 2020! Bad JD, BAD! So I decided to review what I've acquired since my last addition here, and came up with the number 78 (with two pre-orders - this excludes 1/43s, which I'll do the same for another time). So I'm going to just update this with pics of the newbies (any of my classic histories will come later). And I apologize in advance for the many that are still in their packaging or, worse, have yet to be photographed!

You've all simultaneously made me feel welcome and intimidated - the quality of the photos members post here is amazing! I am very much a neophyte, both in collecting diecast and especially in photography, so please bear with me (as I was resizing my sample pics, I saw all kinds of flaws that I intend to remedy when I next have four days to blow unpacking, posing and reposing).

I am first and foremost a racing fan and my little collection and my planned acquisitions reflect that (I just ordered the GMP Ferrari 330P4 - no, not the 1/8th version!). Most of these cars are from races I read about or, very occasionally, saw on film or TV - from a more romantic and sadly more dangerous era. All but two are 1/18th scale and many are unassembled and/or unpacked as I have no room to display them. Here we go!

UPDATE 1/31/16: Not much has changed in the seven years since I created this post. I didn't get back to New Jersey until Dec. 2012 and even then was not given the time to get a place that would allow me to display my slowly growing collection. They are still all stored, but I've expanded my selections a bit with some ebbs-and-flows based upon the vagaries of my profession:

Last night I did some major cleanup in my apartment and for the first time, broke down and tossed a bunch of shipping boxes and labeled and stored my collection in my den closet:

Dude!!!!!
Awesome...
Daytona cobra, I'm off to find 1👍

RED! You know I am a motorsports fan and LOVE the liveried race cars, and all of your collection is awesome and beautiful. But some are my absolute favorites, quoting their photos below.

For me the Autoart BMW 635 CSi with the "x-ray" livery are some of the most stunningly beautiful and well crafted models ever made, simply because the livery is just so gosh darn gorgeous. It is perfectly balanced between realism/detail vs drawing style, not being photorealistic and also not being too cartoonish. Very fresh looking, and unless I am mistaken Autoart executed these complex liveries using tampo printing only, which to me elevates these models to a million times better than their contemporary ABS plastic models festooned with decals when there is a hint of a livery.

DONE!!!

Discussion starter · #838 · (Edited)
OK, I'm long overdue to post another of my model histories, so here we go. As usual, it's long and detailed, so bathroom and snack breaks are recommended before you start (you've been warned!).

The mid-Sixties were a time of change for Porsche as they began to envision taking steps to make themselves competitive with the leading prototypes rather than settling for battling for class wins among the two-liter teams. As the company had done for several years, it took the model that it entered in the very competitive European Hillclimb Championship and used it as a basis for their World Sportscar Championship challengers.

In 1966, factory driver Gerhard Mitter won the Hillclimb title driving what is labeled a “910 Coupé” (for the life of me, I could not find a photo of this version of the car). The 910 (internally dubbed “906/10” and considered to be a further development of the 906) differed from the 1966 906 by:
  1. Smaller 13-inch wheels (as used in Formula One at the time) compared to the 906’s 15-inchers
  2. A single central wheel nut instead of the 906’s five nuts as in a road car (the 906 is generally considered the last Porsche racing car also intended for road use)
  3. Regular doors rather than the 906’s iconic gull-wing arrangement
  4. Suspension changes
Image

Hans Herrmann during the 1966 Bondone, Italy, hillclimb in the 1966 910 Coupe with the roof panel removed.

!967 saw the 910 become the primary vehicle for the factory racing team, powered by one of two 1.99-liter six cylinder engines producing between 200 and 220 bhp or a 2.2-liter six cylinder engine producing 270 bhp, or the 1.98-liter eight-cylinder 275 bhp engine. Gerhard Mitter would take the second of three consecutive Hillclimb titles driving the 910-8 Bergspyder employing the eight-cylinder.

In circuit racing in 1967, the 910 made its debut with Hans Herrmann and Jo Siffert’s solo run to 4th place and the Under-2-liter Prototype class win in the #52 behind the three Ferrari prototypes enacting “The Commendante’s Revenge” in the Daytona 24-hours.

Sebring would see two 910s entered and they finished 3rd and 4th overall, again taking the Under-2-liter Prototype class win with the leading #36 of Scooter Patrick and Mitter just missing 2nd place over the factory Ford GT40 Mk. II that was in the pits with engine failure, ending up on the same lap. 4th place was #37 driven by Siffert and Herrmann again. Autodelta premiered its Alfa Romeo T33s but both failed with overheating, their Monza testing not effectively emulating the scalding Florida conditions.

The Monza 1000 Kilometers was a race where the Porsches could be expected to face the first significant challenge to their domination of the U2L class with seven Ferrari 206 S’s entered, including one by the factory. But only four actually started the race and none were classified as finishers. Meanwhile, the 910s ended up 3rd and 5th with Jochen Rindt and Mitter’s #15 taking the class win followed by the usual suspects, Herrmann and Siffert in the #16.

Next came the Spa 1000 Kilometers and back to normal with only one U2L competitor, a private 206 S, for the two 910s. Siffert/Herrmann’s #21 took advantage of heavy rains on a course that did not favor the underpowered Porsches to finish a superb 2nd overall, once again winning their class with the #22 of Gerhard Koch and Mitter ending up 7th.

The Targa Florio had long been an event that Porsche was most successful overall with their lighter, nimble cars best handling the 44+ mile trek through Sicilian mountains. To this end, six 910s were entered, three featuring the 2.2-liter 8-cylinder engines. Ferrari countered with four Dino 206s, one from the factory and two from the very professional North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T.) while Autodelta returned after skipping all the races after Sebring to work on their car, with four Alfa Romeo T33s.

The result? A Porsche 910 walkover as they took 1-2-3-6 while suffering the model’s first DNFs of the season with a suspension failure and an accident taking out two. The winner was the Paul Hawkins/Rolf Stommelen 8-cylinder #228 - the first for the 2.2-liter eight-cylinder engine - with another 8 in 6th, the #218 of Siffert and Herrmann. Ferrari saw its best finish of the season to date with a private 206 S in 4th overall while none of the Alfa T33s were classified as finishers.

Next was the most important race on the calendar (for the company, at least), the Nürburgring 1000-Kilometers, viewed as their home event. Once again, six 910s, three of them 2.2-liter 910/8s, vs. two Ferrari Dino 206 S’ (neither of which started after practice incidents) and four Autodelta T33s (one of which was scratched after an accident in practice).

The fastest cars on the track were the winged Chaparral 2F-Chevy – which took pole nearly eight seconds faster than the second place Lola T70 Mk. III GT-Aston Martin – but neither car lasted to the one-quarter mark. In the end, 910s finished 1-2-3-4 while all three 910/8s DNF’d (one lasted long enough to be classified in 4th). The winning 910 was driven by Udo Schütz and American Joe Buzzetta. I’ll come back to this car since this is the one whose model I just purchased. One Alfa Romeo T33 finished – a first for the model – taking 5th place overall, a lap down.

Le Mans, of course, was THE race of the season and Porsche appropriately approached it that way. Although the factory entered five cars, only two were 2-liter 910s. The others were a Sports-class 906 and two long-tail 907s. None of the three entered Dino 206 S or three Autodelta Alfa T33s showed up, so Porsche almost had the 2-liter Prototype class to itself, except that Matra chose to debut its BRM-powered M630 with a pair contesting this classic event.

In the end, neither Matra made it to half-distance in the attrition-filled 24 Hours (only 16 of the 54 starters made it to the end) while the old standbys, Siffert and Herrmann, won the 2-liter Prototype class with a 5th place in the #41 907 LH followed by the one surviving 910, the #38 of Stommelen and Jochen Neerpasch while the sister 910 of the NĂĽrburgring-winning pair of SchĂĽtz and Buzzetta went out early with oil pressure issues.

The Circuito de Mugello, at the time a 41.1 mile Targa-style event through the roads of Tuscany, was not considered a major event by most teams but still counted toward the World Manufacturers title, so Porsche entered three 910s, countered by three factory T33s and three Dino 206 S, two from the Scuderia. Unfortunately, the factory Dinos would be withdrawn by the factory after regular driver Günther Klass’ fatal practice accident. All three of the Alfa Romeos DNF’d while Porsche ended up sweeping the podium with two 2.2-liter 910/8s 1-2 - Schütz/Mitter trailed by Neerpasch/Stommelen (the third 910, the Siffert/Herrmann 2-liter model, DNF’d early, before Hans could even get in). Oddly, the U2L Prototype class was won by the factory Gijs van Lennep/Vic Elford 911 R in 3rd place! That car was so-categorized because it had failed homologation as an update to the 911 S (being a super-lightweight version with a 906 engine).

The title-decider would be the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch and Ferrari and Porsche went all-out to beat each other. Porsche entered five cars, three 2.2-liter 8-cylinder-powered - two 910s and one 907LH - and two 2-liter 910s. Contending this effort was Ferrari with three 330P4s and one 412P, three Lola T70-Chevy coupes and the fast-but-fragile Chaparral 2F, all driven by an all-star cast of drivers from F1 and endurance racing. In the end, the Chaparral posted its only finish of the season with the win, while the Jackie Stewart/Chris Amon 2nd place in a 330P4 Spyder clinched the season championship for the Scuderia over the 3rd place #11 2.2-liter 910/8 of Siffert/Bruce McLaren followed by the similarly-powered 907 LH of Herrmann/Neerpasch.

My new Porsche 910 is from Exoto’s Motorbox line, so is significantly more basic and less detailed than their efforts in the Racing Legends line. But it’s beautifully executed, perfect tampos and tight lines all around. I’ve noticed among models of racing Porsches of this era that the engines seem to look more primitive than those of other cars in 1/18th. It doesn’t come close to matching Exoto’s pre-XS engine presentations in models such as the Sauber-Mercedes, for instance, so don’t look for that here. But it serves its purpose for what was a reasonable sale price on the Exoto website.

Some time ago I had a debate about why the model apparently doesn’t come with a roof for the car; as you can see, there is none for the Targa-style top, whereas the model of the sister 910 from the same race, the #18, Exoto #MTB00067, DOES have a roof panel. I recently was researching for this history and in the Wikipedia entry for winning co-driver Udo Schütz read that he was “rather heavy and tall”, earning him the nickname, “Bull from Selters“ (his home town). Looking at the famous photo of the start of the 1000 Kilometers of Nürburgring, showing a seemingly endless row of Porsches on the Le Mans-style starting grid, I saw that his 910 was the only that you could see a helmet sticking out of the top, a lá Dan Gurney. No wonder there is no roof!
