In one one my recent topics, http://diecastxchange.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4243, there was a debate that started with regard to the Mercedes SL500. I've promised to do a comparo pic test, and here it is. The blue car is Motor Max, retractable roof and the red one is the Maisto convertible. Maisto offers the closed version of the car in AMG 'make-up. IT WAS OUT TO TAKE A BATH, so it couldn't be included in the test.

The shut lines are abvious from these two pictures. I have tried to close MM's trunk, but this was my best.

The front looks good for both cars. Thumb-up to Maisto for the mesh-grille under the plate. MM's is just a piece of plastic slotted, but M's is a see-thru

MM's shut lines are a bif turn-off all around the car. So I will not point it out in every pic. Here my Thumb-up to MM for hollow exhaust.

Next four pics are a close-up of the tires. In the first two you can see those openings on the fender. MM's are very easily moving, while M's are well secured. The same stands for those on the hood. Thumb-up to MM for drilled brake discs, but thumb-up to Maisto on the detail of the rim. Both tires are no-name tires (shame)

Engine bay, M's just a bit more detailed compared to MM. The big radiator grille with the star on it is very flimsy on MM. Here you can see better the grille under the plate.

Interior. MM, A HUGE TURN-OFF. The center console is simply painted all over. It stands-out big time (negatively). M has a far superior interior treatment. Everything looks so much more natural. http://images.snapfish.com/338%3C9%3A47232...37%3A5%3Bot1lsi

The side mirrors: spot the difference.

For this, I will not buy the MM version. If I will never get the Minichamps version of the retractable roof, I will get two separate cars the closed and the open one.

I also have Maisto's SLK retractable roof and I display it with the roof closed. But I don't see this...

I am not biased towards the Maisto. I have some good Motor Max models. It is true nobody else make those models so I can't compare them with anything. It's true that I had to dig hard to find decent lines. I also believe MM is trying to improve. And I really hope they will do it, because they've announced some great models in theis line-up.

Hey Dan, thanks for the excellent comparo of the two models. I have the Maisto MB and after seeing the MM version in your pics, I know I won't be getting one. :jk:

Thanks for the comparison Dan  I appreciate it will also go the route of open and closed Maisto's (only have the open right now)

MM does have a lot of interesting new models coming out so I hope that they listen and improve upon their quality before they release them

That's a great comparison between the two. The pictures really tell it all don't they?

Let's also consider that this is one of Maisto's best models. Therefore, for Motormax to "best" it in several areas and be at least comparable to it is a huge step forward for the modelmaker. The Motormax models that I have (X5 and Saleen S7) are definitely below average, so MM is improving. The NSX, from the latest pics, looks pretty darn good!

:iagr: In comparison to their previous offerings this is definately a step in the right direction for them. The NSX does look quite good and will be interested to see someone do a review of it at a future date (hint hint Eug) :sm: :sm:

Thanks for the comparo on these models. I have the Maisto version of this model and must say it is awesome for the money.

I do expect Maisto to make a version with the retractable roof soon.

I hope so
Now that would make for an interesting comparison:

Best value for the money: Motormax VS Maisto VS Minichamps

As I am sure the Minichamps is the best of the bunch, best value of the bunch would definitely be the Maisto. Maisto has gotten everythiing about this model right. I do like the hollow tips on the MM version though
