:ranting Mattel Hot Wheels :blastaway
I am very upset after opening my Mattel
Hot Wheels 1/18 scale Ferrari Enzo last
night! To my dismay I found that the rear
engine cowl is made entirely of plastic!!
That is almost half the body!!! How cheap!!!
I'm very disappointed and I will not buy another!
I think that mattel bought the Ferrari trade mark
rights and ruined the good name of Ferrari!
Bburago would have done a better job at producing
the Enzo than this!! I don't know, am I way off
base here? I can't imagine that the rest of you
who bought an Enzo from Mattel can be satisfied
with this model?!?! Or are you? :feedback

I have a rule regarding Hot Wheels cars: I only buy them if they are strictly in the focus of my collection, if no one else makes the car and if the price is very good. If the model fails in any of those aspects, I won't buy it. I particularly rate their cars as being worse then YM or Bburago. In fact, they're all the way down in my diecast food chain.
Since I end up usually paying only $10-$15 for Hot Wheels cars I really don't expect a whole lot from them.
They are what they are.
If you want an Enzo they are the only game in town.
It looks pretty good on the shelf and it doesn't cost very much.
I would have to guess that the deal is good for both Hot Wheels and Ferrari or they wouldn't have agred to such a long term commitment.
Maybe the $ Ferrari is getting is more important to them than the quality of models being produced.
I am sure that Ferrari has to ok a model before it is released.
Maybe the anger should be directed at Ferrari instead of Mattel.
My Enzo's paint looks like crap, all bumpy and rough! :blastaway

And the plastic body part even decolors too!
Thats what I'm mad about :ranting
The only advantage I can think of with the plastic engine cover is that it's almost guaranteed to stayed up when opened. You should have seen my disappointment when I opened the cover of my son's yellow Beanstalk GT40 Concept & it flopped back down. At that moment, I felt pretty ripped off.

But apart from that, I hear exactly where you're coming from mz6jlt.
Yeah I was disappointed too when I saw and bought the 1/18 Enzo at the 2003 Paris Motor Show.

When I took it out of the box I was prity disappointed to find that the grill behind the front wheelarch was a sticker, the rear hood was plastic, both mirrors were the same size unlike the real one, no Ferrari logo on the calipers and that only one door stayed open.

To be honest I think Hotwheels rushed this model to have it at the Paris Motor Show on the same day the real Enzo was released to the public. I think Hotwheels could of spent alot more time on this model and better their products, especially their Ferraris to gain customers. I thought they were gonna improve when I saw the 575MM and 550 Barchetta but I guess not. They should also get the licence to have Bridgestone and Pirelli on their tires too, they look too pale.
I'd have to say that Hot Wheels is hit or miss on most of its cars. Some cars are very nice (250 & 288 GTO, above & beyond Burago) , and some plainly suck (C5, fanatsy cars).
:iagree Even though Mattel are believed to have spent $1 million developing the Enzo in 1/18 scale (making it the most expensive development for any 1/18 model), it doesn't show at all with the model.

True'dat! However, I'm still satisfied with mine. It IS a rip-off to have the engine cover made of plastic. They could have very easily cut some thin metal instead. Oh well, I don't expect too much from Hot Wheels, so I'm not incredibly disappointed.

:iagree Cheap, readily available, and cars no one else makes. :cheers
I just can't understand why Ferrari would allow
them to do such a hack job on this knowing that
no one else can make their cars!!! :nutkick

Max, I feel that way too. If it's cheap, why not? The big problem with Hot Wheels (and Ertl too) down here is that they're priced as an AUTOart or even higher. The worst problem is that some noodle brains think they ARE worth it.

And yes, I think the real blame lies on Ferrari's shoulder. They aproved the cars and new they were going to be junk.
One good thing about the Hot Wheels Enzo is that it is cheap enough for you to spend the money and time on making modifications to improve the quality. I have two in my collection. One I will keep stock, the other I plan on making modifications that I have learned about on this forum. Now all I need is the time to do it.

I've only bought two Hot Wheels ever. And SM Jr. has them both. If they were higher in quality, they would've been higher priced. And quite possibly, SM Jr. would not have an Enzo nor Murcielago in his collection. I'll have to ask him for his 10 yr old perspective to see what's important to him. :lol

It all boils down to one simple thing - money. Mattel are rumoured to have coughed up $50 million to pay for a 5-year licence that gave them exclusive rights to make Ferraris in 1/18. I can't think of any other model manufacturer that can afford to spend that kind of money on a licence.
One thing that I really have to commend Hot Wheels for is the fact that without their Ferrari models being readily available at a reasonable price point, I probably would not be as involved in this hobby as I am now. It is true that if you have a collection rich in Exotos, AUTOart, Kyosho and the like, the models that Hot Wheels produces will look inexpensive and lacking in detail, but for someone just starting out in the hobby that we love.....they could be the most beautiful models out there.

I was proud of my Hot Wheels Ferrari's when I got them originally, and went out of my way to find all of the different ones possible. They were the building blocks of my collection, and as I really didn't even know that more deatiled cars were available at the time, displayed them proudly for all to see.

The fact of the matter is that without budget manufacturers like Maisto, Bburago and Mattel, a lot of new members to our hobby would not have become involved. True the quality of the models is in most cases not the highest, but every collection needs to start somewhere.

I still look upon my Hot Wheels Ferrari's fondly, and until the day that I can replace them with a Kyosho, AUTOart or other higher quality version, will still display them proudly.

Regarding the Enzo, yes Hot Wheels made some mistakes with this model, but for a less than $20.00 purchase price, I can not complain all that loudly about mine.

Just my $0.02 on the subject.

:iagree My son wouldn't have 3/4 of the diecasts he has were it not for those companies.
Truth be told, there are lots of cars (including some Ferraris) that I don't like enough to spend AUTOart or Kyosho type money on them.
The Maisto, Hot Wheels versions are perfect for me.
I get the same thrill opening a box that came in the mail if its an Exoto or a Hot Wheels.
Its all great! :drinkbud
