I was wondering if I could get any advice in regards to 1/18 MiniChamps models? I've never owned one, and don't believe I've seen one up close. How does the detail compare with AutoArt or Kyosho?

I'm specifically considering buying the MiniChamps 1/18 Opel GT. Any clues to the level of quality, details, and features?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Hi MRMILO

Go for it, you wont regret :cheers
Minichamps models are great.
Examples - Porsche 906 & 904, BMW 3.0 CSL (IMSA, Calder)...
I saw the opel, it is at the same level of the CSL.

I only have one Minichamps, and I'm sure to buy more. I would say that my Kenwood Porsche has most features as good as AUTOart or Kyosho. The only part that I thought could be better was the cockpit.

Some Minichamps models suffer from the "pealing decal" syndrome but since you're interested in a "street" car, that's something you don't have to worry about. In general, Minichamps models are of very good quality, on par with Kyosho and Autoart. Minichamps also makes many models nobody else does. The Opel GT was first released in 2000 so in some ways it may be lacking some of today's commonly used features but it is a very good model of a beautiful sports car.

I have a blue Opel GT by Minichamps and I find it to be a good model. It has been around for a few years and it lacks some features such as highly detailed brakes and has a non-opening boot, but it has a nice interior, good engine detail and best of all headlights that swivel into place through 180 degrees just like the real thing. Worth getting I think! :cheers

Minichamps quality is superb and you can't go wrong with them. There are some minor problems, but you get these with everyone else too.

What colour GT are you looking for? Minichamps have just released a gold one. Prices here are around the £39.99 mark...and worth every penny.

You can check out my site, although probably better for UK and EU, as postage costs for the bigger models can get quite expensive to the US. It's a pretty easy site to use, so you shouldn't have any problems. Just click here :cheers

I have only one Minichamps, the 3.0CSL. (You can see some pics by myself and others here:

I would say it's as good as my Kyosho 2002, except that the glass is a little bit wavier and the suspension doesn't compress (same with AutoArt). It does have brake discs rotating inside static calipers, which this particular Kyosho doesn't have. In terms of paint and brake & wheel detail, I think AutoArt is better. I've got no complaints with the Minichamps interior; it's up to par for this price range.

I think you should go for the Opel, it looks really great (I've seen it up close but don't have it unfortunately). Their Escort is not really good though, it has below Maisto detail and the paint is not very good :ranting :ranting :ranting Missed chance!!! :badidea
The BMW M3 GTR OTOH is very good, although the paint isn't very good here too :crying (unpainted spots eg. inside the air intakes, little dust marks in the paint).
I plan buying more from Minichamps though, as I think they have some very nice examples. :cheers

One site in the USA that carries PMA (Minichamps) is below:

http://www.scale18.com/cgi-bin/page?a=diecast.html

It offers reasonable prices, I'm sure there are several other (perhaps better?) sites....

You may want to also look on E-Bay or even the minichamps home site as they may have a contact list of an e-mail link to ask them where to go....

Let us know what you find out as I'm sure many of us would be interested in reasonable priced Minichamps autos....
