I remember a quote I read from a Marine after the battle of Hue during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam which went something like: "We had to destroy the city in order to save it"

Certainly ironic anyway! :lol

Hopefully Ronan gave the explanation for what is oxymoron in that car.
I copy/paste his answer : "Actually I've thought the same about the
towncar too in that in Europe anyway a "town car" sounds very similar to a "city car" which usually means something small like the Smart ForTwo or a Mini, not a full size saloon/sedan!"'. When I first landed in NY, JFK, 10 years ago, I was really impressed to see these 5+ meters long Lincols called towncar, so I thought : if everything is so huge in America, how a Limo would be...
The only ''Towncar'' Lincoln in Greece is the one of the Bishop, which hardly
moves in streets of Athens.

Anyway to me oxymoron is also the "Range Rover Sport", or the "Citröen ΑΧ GT"!!

May not make sense to you, but the TownCar name comes from the marketing that you can take this car "On The Town" like showing it off. If you lived in a rural area, as most of the target audience of these cars did, you had a pickup to drive around, and you aspired to have a car like this take to "town" to Church, or the the movies (the picture show as it was called) or to do your errands.

Even to this day, the few Towncars that are actually sold to individuals (besides the Limo/Taxi ones) are sold in smaller markets to retired couples.

Interesting that "Town Car" is the English translation of "Coupe de Ville". Also, the Town Car is built on the "Panther" platform that has been in service since 1978. Quite a feat to have a successful platform for over 30 years.

I have always thought that they give you the feeling that you took your living room couch on a drive with you.

Thank you for the detailed information, after this short lesson there is a different approach to TownCar. But the first impression for every european, I suppose, is that both Lincoln TownCar and Cadillac De Ville are h u g e cars
for urban area, not to mention down town areas in Paris, Rome, London, Athens. So it is still remains oxymoron at first glance.

I will add another oxymoron like : Citröen AX GT.

I don't think Ford ever had Europeans in mind with the Town Car sales. :giggle
Another thing to consider, those cities you mention are centuries old. Most cities were the TCs prowl, have been built since the automobile took over so the streets can accommodate them.

Here is one: Ford Fiesta- if I had to be cooked up in my 70 mile commute in one, I would not be in a party mood! :giggle
