What I always do is spray 3 mist coats and two wet coats and possibly a last clear coat. It takes just under 2 cans of Tamiya spray paint.

I heat my paint in a bucket of hot water before spraying to thin it out and make it go further. sprays easier and in a finer mist.. I apply 1 mist coat and let it dry for about 15 minutes and then apply a medium coat and then about 1 hour later if needed a final thicker coat... I then wait 2 to 3 days before spraying it in clear...

I use automotive paints on most of my models... but have used the Tamiya quite a bit in recent months with varying degrees of success.. If using a big can I will use half a can to 1 model for base coat and colour and almost 1 can of clear for a deep glowing finish.... which I apply over a 2 week period... I often dont sand between coats either... just a wipe with some prepsol.

The only thing I can add is that I usually bake mine in my oven. I set the temperature to about 250 degrees F, and bake for about 10-12 minutes after every coat (including primer). It seems to take some of the orange peel out of it. Remember this only works on the die cast parts, don't try to bake any plastic parts, such as noses, etc.
