Hello world!
My name is Jade, an IT consultant working hard in one of the fortune 500s. My hobby has been always collecting high end models, specifically Exoto, CMC and so on.
With experience of buying from exoto.com and ebay.com over the years, I have learned the following:
1. exoto along with its dealers jacks up the price or artificially inflate the price at its retail level, and throw out close to 50% sales once a while. I bought a few items at their full retail price, then I felt horrible and cheated when I saw the first newsletter with the nice discount coupon.:( , Gotta do my homework more.
2. exoto sometimes has low quantity items show their actual number of quantity on the website. let me tell you, I recognize that these are pretty misleading or better, one of exoto sales tricks. In the past 12 months, I have observed a few instances where some items were down to 1 or 2, I was thinking to buy because I knew the unwritten rule is once an item retires, the price will jump krazyyyyy and then someone else had done so to put the items into retired mode. A few days later, these items are live selling again. Luckily I didn't buy those last few, else I would feel awful. That led me to think perhaps these quantity number were just there trying to get people to buy quick and more. Plus limited editions should be known of how many in total would be produced ahead of time by exoto company.
3. Pre order with exoto seems to be problematic. I read a couple of threads about how hard it was to get the money back after a few months. Never trying to put my own money into one of the preorders and wait for months.
4. Exoto sells its own products on ebay under casabattiloro for mostly press and damaged items. Not sure what implications are but rarely seen a manufacturer selling thru ebay directly to end consumers.
5. Sometimes Exoto has new release items available on exoto.com for sale before they even have them in stock, e.g. Porsche 934 momo and alfa 159. Last year I order one alfa when the website presented it as in stock and it took around 4 months to receive it. Many replies of my emails came with excuses like, shipment problem or delay. Hello, I thought you listed as available not pre-order. Just today I saw GPC97240D as available with low stock status, would this be one of them? I would not order it until someone has confirmed he/she has received it.
I cannot really point out what goes wrong here but just sense something is not right.
All comments are welcome. I will be all ears to hear what other brothers and sister have to say.
P.S. if I wrote something incorrect, please tell me to change.

Sounds a bit strong.

They have 50% sales, nothing wrong with that - Either be patient or pay the full price :) It's a gamble as to whether a model will go out of stock at full price or you'll be able to get the one you want discounted. The Sales are usually around US Public Holidays, so pretty easy to predict, even if the models on sale aren't.

Unless they explicitly state a model is Limited Edition and will not be remade, you can't really complain if they make a few more of a popular model now and then. If they ARE saying they're Limited, this is a bit disreputable, IMO.

They're far from the only manufacturer to promise models and never deliver on them, but if you pre-order you should be able to get your money back after a while. If they're taking orders for models they have no intention of making, that's wrong, but is there any evidence of that?

Some of their models are wonderful.

I have a couple of XJR9s (I know some dislike these, but hell, they're XJR9s! :D), a Sauber C9 (which is nicer than the Jags as a model) and a Cobra Daytona. I'd like a Nissan R89C, but they're too expensive for me even at sale prices, so I guess I'll never get one :(

I guess it's everyone's choice as to whether they'll deal with Exoto or not. I did buy my Castrol XJR9 from them during a sale and the process was smooth and problem free. If I saw a model I really wanted at a good price, I'd deal with them again.

Thank you!
I love C9s so much. I once had a desire to collect every single piece of exoto models ever produced and put them in a big ass auction on ebay and see if that would generate some synergies. But this is far from becoming a reality.:(

I would say you would be disappointed. Complete set rarely (if ever) bring the amount that individual pieces sold one at the time would.

There's no doubt that Exoto models are top shelf, I have two of their Corvette GrandSports and am in awe everytime I look at them. However, they were not bought directly from Exoto and I didn't pay near their MSRP - mine were eBay purchases. It seems like your assessment is pretty spot on with what others have expressed on the forum. To continue to buy their cars, you have to play the game. Look on ebay for deals or wait for their 50% off sales. As with anything in life, patience will prevail!!!

Selling products to consumers on eBay is in direct violation of distributor and wholesale contracts. I only know of Exoto and AUTOart doing this. They're two peas in a pod. I don't have any idea why a retailer would choose to do business with either of these companies because they are patently dishonest and their products are not profitable.

Love the products, avoid dealing with Exoto where possible. There are two golden rules if you have to deal direct with Exoto:

- Make sure the item is in stock
- Never pre-order

You will find that there are many quality retailers out there that stock Exoto models, are reputable and do not inflate prices because an item is 'about' to be retired.

One of the sites sponsors 'Go Motor Bids' is a great place to shop for Exotos and they provide good communication and accurately described products.

agree with the OP and I agree with the above. tbh I find exoto are a pretty shady company to deal with; I would suggest that most collectors feel the same and would stop dealing with them in a heartbeat were it not for the fact that they produce such good models. One shouldn't excuse the other though.

Thank you!I'd just done some more research on exoto company, it seems like ppl like its products but got some complaints about their service and the way they try to run their business. I can feel that to some extend.
Correct me if I am wrong. I felt like the true market value of these exoto models are just 50% to 75% of their MSRPs. Tops. Well, I don't think they have a good and stable distribution channel and they probably sell more models thru their own website than thru dealers. First off, who are the official exoto dealers in U.S.? replicarz? Until now, I have not learned who those are or exoto is doing a monopoly over U.S. market.I mostly just leverage their big fat coupon occasionally to save up some bucks.Sometimes gomotorbid and replicarz are good source and lately I have tried diecastenvy.com, the two purchases went well. It seems like they have a good selection of exoto models to offer and operate in that niche market. Not sure if they will be expanding. Now I am trying to save a few beer every weekend for this Lotus.
Exoto 1/18 Lotus 72D #2 Victory Salute Ronnie Peterson*Man, I really missed the boat on this one. It is out of stock now.http://www.replicarz...uctinfo/CMC047/

I guess you could say that I'm an avid Exoto collector. Their products are, as has already been said, top shelf! They are setting the standard of what a die-cast model should be! My collection consists primarily of Exoto offerings; however, I will be the first to say that their business practices are some of the most shadiest low-balling thievery in the die-cast industry. I've dealt personally with Tony K., and I have absolutely no respect for that man whatsoever. Exoto Inc. is a band of crooks - 'nough said. You're writeup perfectly sums up every aspect of Exoto's business techniques... there's really nothing much to add.

I have a few Exoto models, only six of them, but they are amongst my favourite items. I've never purchased directly from them though shipping etc is mega expensive, plus I'll have to pay import duties.

Anyway I spoke to an ebay seller (not listed in this thread) who sell a lot on ebay, their price was VERY good for the model, so I asked if it was 100% perfect etc (they'd only use stock pics on their page etc) I mentioned that I'd seen damaged items for sale elsewhere (loads had damaged suspension) they told me that all damaged items were destroyed at source, sounded plausable to me (why wouldn't they want to keep their QC up? they are top end after all) anyway how the seller has them is anyones guess, the prices are good, plus they do a fair few retired models.

I did contact Exoto directly once as I was after a door priser tool (second hand buy & the damn thing was missing) for a 934 Turbo, they never replied to me.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has been to their Tifosi store in Dubai? I have someone going there next month & the store is local to where they go on business.

All in all though (as mentioned) you take your chances paying the price on their website. Personally I really rate their models & if I considered it to be too expensive I'd hold out.

Interesting, you had face to face dealings with Exoto boss?
If you don't mind, I'd love to hear stories.
Sorry if it was repeated elsewhere in the forum as I am a new comer.

Well said. Perfect in-fact. Simple, straight to the point guideline regarding acquiring Exoto. Totally agree with you Simon.

I too have dealt with the owner. I visited their outlet in California, bought a trunk-load of Exotos at 60% to 75% off,
which is partly why I managed to acquire a bunch of them. At first, was all too happy to meet him, even had some cars signed
by him. Got a couple of Saubers for two of my friends as well, also had those signed. So, pretty positive experience at
that time, though sadly short-lived. Months later, I ordered some cars with them online, and after much back and forth,
they finally got my order right, but then they had over-charged me and so they owed me some money. Let me just say that
it took them months and an ultimatum from Paypal to refund me $80. Since then, I lost respect for the guy. I still have
the emails where he personally repeatedly promised to refund me the following day, but never did, until I filed a case
with Paypal. So my advice, as much as possible, use something like Paypal, so you're protected. It's a shame, coz his
models are top shelf, but the integrity is rock bottom.

Your personal situation is much like mine: a lot of broken promises and a huge headache to get a simple refund. Most DXers know my story by now, but I'll share a brief summary of what happened sense you asked:

I purchased an out-of-stock item from Exoto's website. Apparently, there was an inventory glitch and their records showed that the model was still available... when, in fact, it was not. Needless to say, it took 3 months for the lazy staff at Exoto headquarters to figure out that they had an inventory glitch. Getting them to return calls was near impossible... I quickly realized that they were hoping that I would just go away and forget about it, and they would be able to keep my money.

I didn't give up that easy. After another 3 months of them promising that a check was in the mail for a full refund, nothing ever came. So, I threatened to contact the BBB and my credit card company if they did not refund my money. They took my threat serious, and the next thing I knew, Tony K. was calling me trying to cut a deal. He was promising to send me a free model or allow me to pick out another free model... but, a refund just wasn't an option. I refused the deal, and told him that I wanted a refund. After another 3 months of nothing, I filed a claim with the BBB, my credit card company. Within 2 weeks I was refunded! So, 9 months of headache over a few hundred dollars... and, if you account for the 2 months I waited for the model to arrive before contacting Exoto, it took nearly 11 months to initiate and resolve the conflict.

Been to the Exoto store in Dubai. Worth a visit to look at things but prices are pretty inflated so nothing to really buy. Someone mentioned an Exoto outlet store in california. Really? Never heard of it. Maybe worthy a detour if someone else can confirm it exists and what kind of models they have.

Urrrr. Wow, so many people have similar experiences with exoto boss?
Well, whining is whining. We cannot make a difference any way, cant change the way he conducts and operates exoto company.
Anyone know if he might be peeking at this forum every now and then?
Maybe we should form a model Union or something.
United, as we stand.

Thanks that's what I really wanted to know, my boss goes there a lot & she used to get a lot of stuff pretty cheap (loads of 'should be expensive' handbags etc) she said lately it's not the case.
I'll still see if she can go to the store (the one in Dubai) as I'm intrigued to see the prices (I've given her a list) I'm expecting website prices tohugh, but if they aren't that's a bonus.

I've just seen on their website that one of my 'retired' models has four remaining items in stock
It was greyed out 'retired' for ages, now it's there!!!
Ok I didn't buy it as they were running low, I got it then found that it was retired - it just takes the pee that it's still available!

Also, one of thier others (the 934 Vaillant car) is meant to be retired too, but it's in stock too.
