Hey DX just a question. I would like to get and display a P51 Mustang plane with my 1:18 Kyosho Ferrari 250 GTO. I found a ton of them all different scales. I have my eye on a 1/72 P51 but I have no idea of its size versus a 1:18 car. So what model plane scale realistically matches the 1:18 scale for cars? Thx.

Closest scale which is readily available is 1/24th.
For something bigger, look at radio control.
You might be able to find something without the r/c controller.

Slartibartfast thanks. The sites I was on did not have planes in 1:18 which was the obvious scale in my mind. But all I saw was scales I am not used to so I had no frame of reference. Totally new to model planes and Ive seen some 1:18 models that look quite large compared to car scale hence my post. I will search for 1:24 scale and see what I find. Slim pickins for 1:18 scale planes in my searches.

I wish there were diecast cars that came in 1:48 scale to match aircraft models. 1:18 scale planes, even smaller aircraft like the P-51, would be ginormous.

Kaiser Technica yep...Way too large for the display case I want to get. I looked at the 1:24 scale as SBF suggested but the only ones I find are kits I would have to build. Very time consuming. I really hoped I could find a die-cast ready built one with fine detail in 1:24. Oh well I may have to settle for a kit and take forever to put it together lol.

There are numerous 1:18 scale aircraft on eBay; just type "1:18 aircraft" and look at the results. While most of them are WW2 variants (like the P51 Mustang), they also have some more modern jets. Be prepared as the prices are normally around $80-100 for the starting point and go up to 800-1400 for some specific F14's. They also have helicopters in 1:18 as well if you want to make a corporate copter look to match a certain car (?)

Thanks Drums but I've seen them. The scale is just too large. I think a 1:24 like Slartibartfast mentioned maay be closer to real life scale. If you look at a P51 next to a car in real life you will see that a 1:18 P51 vs a 1:18 car is a bit off from real life scale...The plane is too big from the pics and videos Ive seen hence this post.

I understand what your saying, but I think you are incorrect. The P-51 Mustang has a wingspan of 37 feet (11.28 meters) and a length of 32 feet 3 inches (9.83 meters). The propeller is 11 foot 2 inches (3.40 meters). A real P51 Mustang uses a V12 cylinder engine. The height is 13 foot 4.5 inches (4.08 meters) with the wheels on the ground to the top of the vertical propeller. Considering most automobiles are not over 5.5 feet to the top of the roof. The outside diameter of the tire is 27 inches; so taking it all in consideration, the 1:18 P-51 mustang is very close to a 1:18 car.

Just a note; there are some 3/4 replicas flying around the world, do not get them mixed up with the real ones.

Ultimately, it is entirely your call on what you want in scale. Buy what you desire and enjoy it...

Interesting....I guess I can't go by the pics and vids then....I may have to purchase one the cheaper 1:18 P51's and check it out. Thanks for your input Drums and everyone else.

The problem with displaying aircraft models, even 1:32 scale, is that aircraft occupy a square area not easy to store, even 1:48 wont fit in a bookcase.

Although For r/c civilian aircraft, my preferred scale is 1:5, maybe 1:7 for a warbird...

Another option would be to play with the perspectives a bit. For example, suspend the plane above and a bit back behind the car at a certain height. This could make it appear so it's flying a little ways away from the car which helps you get away with the scale difference a bit. Plus, it could make for an attractive display

The 1/18 airplanes are in the correct scale as 1/18 cars. I have seen a few in real life. The 3 3/4 figures that fit inside them are also the same as 1/18 scale.

It’s funny how the size difference can seem off even though their the same scale. I finally displayed my Renault magnums and they seem way out of scale with the 1:18 cars but comparing them to pics (especially the one jumping the Lotus F1 car since I have the model) and 1:18 figures they are to scale even though the models look giant next to the cars

Planes are MUCH bigger than cars, the last few photos are correct. I have a 1/18 P-51D Mustang, the manufacturer is long gone, but there should be some on eBay, they were all plastic but pretty nice. I have several O Guage steam locomotives which are 1/48 so they are displayed next to my WW2 1/48 aircraft, scale and the time period are perfect.

Forgot to add, a 1/18 Radio Control P-51 warbird will be much too small to fly, the plastic display 51 I have is made by BBI, there several others, they run anywhere from $100 to $200. I’ve been flying RC models for 45 years so know a thing or two about them. Very awkward to display in a cabinet, mine hang in the garage, and yes they get VERY dusty, but so what, they have little collectible value, but they make me smile when I’m in the garage.
