What do you regret not buying today?

20304 Views 194 Replies 77 Participants Last post by  chpo
I've noticed that we have the whole "What did you buy today?" and "What do you have on preorder?" threads..but I was thinking, what about a thread based on models we just missed out on in auctions or we regret not buying when they were cheaper or more available? I know I've got many experiences based on models that are way overpriced now but never were before!

So let's hear some stories or regrets, maybe this can motivate us to really find any model we missed out on!

Tecnomodel Ford P68 (race versions only; was still baulking at the prices but belatedly appreciated this rare bird).

I was also originally hesitant to pay the price these were going for, but grabbed the Brands and Spa versions with discounts.
Not huge discounts, but it occurred to me there is unlikely to be any other manufacturer to produce any - particularly in a more desirable material.
Also grabbed two Works C100 with better discounts, even if the car was as unsuccessful as the P68.
Curious why Tecnomodel didn't go with a Zakspeed modified Jagermeister C100, this did result in a number of DRM race wins.....
There was an Autoart McLaren F1 LM in the DX Classifieds a few months ago for $350, more than msrp obviously, but I would jump on it now. But then again, that was around the same time that I finally found another holy grail for much cheaper, the white Autoart 1992 NSX Type R, which I had long given up on. So it might have been one or the other.

I'll keep regretting not replacing my old UT F1 with the Autoart until if LCD finally releases theirs. But apparently it's been over a year since there was any update on that 🤷‍♂️

I could list dozens of models, I've been collecting for over 16 years, and most of that was on a way tighter budget than more recently. 3 more that really stand out: Autoart Miura, Countach LP400, and Countach 25th Anniversary. They were all in my shopping cart on DMW at one point 🤦‍♂️
Left turn from most here.

The Ertl FnF collection were all $25 new, likely less when they were blowing them out. The most common Supra and Eclipse you might be able to scoop in the sub-$100 range. I spent nearly $1,100 to finish out my collection of the ones I was missing (although I was missing 9 of 11). I could have saved $860.

But, having the complete set has value for me.

The FOMO from that has me purchasing cars I might not have otherwise, though.

I regret not bidding higher on this one. I had a max of $131-something (+shipping & tax would have been about $162 total).

3 sold recently for $410.64 buy it now. I guess I was too hung up on the fact it's a sealed resin with ugly silver-painted chrome trim and I couldn't see paying more than I'd pay for a nice, fully-opening diecast with realistic chrome trim. I should have focused more on the subject matter. I love these old 4-door boats with the excessively long hood and trunk, and feel like I might have squandered my only chance to get one. Partly also wanted it because it makes me think of my dad's first car he got when he immigrated to the US, an early 70s black Buick Electra sedan.

Probably half of Autoart's and Exoto's back-catalog, several CMCs and a fair share of Kyoshos. And some Minichamps' Bentleys :D Exotos and CMSs seemed unobtainable to me in late 2000s. But then again, I was a high schooler on my parent's life support, so I couldn't even imagine spending upwards of 100 USD for a model.- Little did I know.

On a more serious note, I regret opting for a Lightweight Kyosho F40 instead of the vanilla one and skimping on Kyosho's true M3 CSL and getting a CSL silver M3 ZHP with CSL wheels. I used to dig the black speedlines and liked the 'not-your-standard-F40' factor, but over the years the model's been mostly annoying me ;D M3 to a much lesser extent, but still.

Probably the Kyosho Ferrari Daytona Race car in plain white - I hesitated so many times and in the end didn't buy it. Now it's so expensive and I'll never pay big money for it. Oh well.
Prepare your left or right kidney for sale - ridiculous prices for those at the moment, around AU$1,000. There is also the STP sponsored one that one guy near me bought at least 15 of from various local retailers (presumably on pre-order, total production run of 400) and then sold them for double retail price a few weeks later, making an easy couple of thousand profit.

I was able to get that STP from one of the FB forums for a reasonable price. I am also looking for the John Sands, but it is proving to be elusive at a reasonable price. No doubt for that same 400 unit production run.

Well done on the STP, it looks great. Yes I think they did 3 x 400 runs at the same time so the factory would allow it (I think it was John Sands, STP and one of the Marlboro cars) - they won't do an individual run of 400 but will do 1200 even if the liveries are different - it looks like the same goes for the latest Camaro releases.

Didn't think I'd want to spend too much on a broken model (already would be $173 after tax for the price it went for). Although in hindsight, I feel like I should have bid higher as it looks like an easy fixer. I would love to have one in my collection, but not for the $300-400 they go for.

A local seller recently had an auction for the Classic Carlectible Holden HX LE:

These don't come up for sale often and when they do they're usually 500+ CAD and ship from AU. I pondered it for awhile, but in the end didn't bid as the seller ghosted me after a few questions and even though it was listed as new it had obviously been handled as the antenna was horizontal with the base held in place by a big lump of glue. That and the antenna didn't look like the original as it wasn't chromed.

Perhaps for the best as it would've cost me around $430 if I had won and who knows what other issues I might have encountered. Unfortunate though.

Blimey, they sell for $300-400 now! No way! many years ago I got one new for £40, But when I came to unscrew it one of the screws was stuck and wouldn't come out. I lost it and smashed the model up, put it on ebay and got more than I paid for it. It even had a bit of a bidding war.

Unfortunately for someone that wants one, it does look like they're selling in that range. Not sure what the first one actual sold for, but I can't imagine they'd have accepted a lowball offer. Prices of discontinued models is awful.

There are so many right now, I don‘t know where to begin! Probably another Falcon though I would guess.
Watch out for rash on the Bentley Arnages too. Great model though - heavy diecast much like the 1:1.

My biggest regret was not buying Wes' CMC Ferrari 312Ps (Coupe and Spyder) as well as the Autoart Alfa TZ and TZ2 he modded. Still managed to purchase a CMC Aston Martin DB4GTZ Goodwood Green but the Ferraris are almost in the unobtainable price range (though hopefully CMC re-release them).

Like so many of us, my list of "regrets" is huge, but to focus on a few highlights:

Exoto Alfa Romeo Alfetta 159/159M - at the time, I just couldn't handle the price and didn't have the appreciation I do now for select classic front-engined F1 cars, but if I had understood then that it would move into "unobtanium" status, I might have made the sacrifice to get one.
Exoto Williams FW14/14B - another re-evaluation, but this was based on my just not feeling a connection to the 1:1 unlike many of our UK/Mansell fans. Now they clearly are in "classic" status
Minichamps Mercedes W07-W10: I have made a point of collecting all of Lewis Hamilton's cars from his rookie year on but delayed picking up his 2016-19 ones because I had other priorities and now the prices have skyrocketed and many of them simply are not easy to find. I just can't justify paying those prices for F1 cars lacking any working features

UPDATE:
Tecnomodel Ford P68
- My relatively low regard for Tecnomodel's overpriced and somewhat superficially detailed resin models has faded in view of their willingness to release models of race cars so many other model manufacturers bypass. This has always been on my list of one of the most beautiful race cars ever and now I appreciate it even more - though it too has evolved into "unobtanium" status....

I'm patiently waiting for CMC to re-release that silver Ferrari 250 SWB California, perhaps after they complete their re-run of the 250 GTO.
i remember when modelissimo had the Autoart Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. wanted to buy one, but waited too long and they got sold out..
I hate it when that happens! Annoying when the sales start while you're at work and can't buy because you're working, it gets to the evening and they're sold out :(
