Thought this might be a bit of a novel thread to have...

What did you do for a hobby before collecting diecast..?

Mine was Games Workshop.. specifically the game Warhammer 40 000 and occasionally Blood Bowl... in the end I mainly painted and didnt play much.. but still enjoyed it all the same..

This is from a new game that Games workshop brought out just before I started in diecast.. the miniature works out approximately 7cm high.. just over twice as high as GW's standard size gaming minatures... the new game "Inquisitor" used these larger sized one's to play..

This one is Battle Brother Artemis of the Death Watch... the character's history is that of a Space Marine which are about the strongest troops in the game.

The miniatures come in multiple pieces and require assembly and painting...

I hand-painted this one in my own Space Marine Chapter's colour scheme to keep with the same theme.. because of the size and extra detail he took me about 3 months of 1-2 hours a day to paint the way you see him now.

Malik:

I remember there was a huge Balrog figurine (limited to 1,000 pieces) made by (I think) GW; is that right? They have sold on eBay for 1,500-2,000 UK pounds. I entered a contest to win one but lost. :( The Balrog is my favorite LOTR character. That pic is incredible; you did an amazing job on it.

My thing before die-cast was collecting Sports Illustrated Swimsuit memorabilia. I am in the process of selling it all now. I found a dealer in TX who will buy everything except the page-a-day calendars.

Malik, that is kickass! Wonderful work! :nicejob

Before diecasts it was knives and pocketknives for me. Too expensive and hard to get new stuf, so nowadays I only buy a new blade once in a while.

I used to collect the Star Wars Epic Force figures. However, since they only made about a dozen or so of them, that did not last too long! I have a custom shelf behind my desk with all my Star Wars items... everyone seems to get me one for Christmas that gets added to the shelf!

It was building models too for me - 1/12 bikes with an occasional car or airplane. Then my two daughters came along and I didn't have the time or space. Kinda ironic (about the space issue) since my diecast collection is now taking over the livingroom!

:cheers

Some plastic I glued & painted...

Building, driving, and re-building real race cars.

This is the last one me and my partner built. It was a tube-frame, Trans-Am spec, Sports Car Club of America GT-1 Camaro. The body style was 1986.

Besides collecting Japanese toys - Riding. :cheers

I use to ride every weekend and all the track days I can get my hands on. I'm bikeless right now - had to sell it to put my son in a good school.

I've been thinking about picking up an R1 by the end of this year, but might end up with a Legacy wagon or an STI first. :cheers

Before diecasts, I was into a little bit of everything.

Since I started collecting, my life hasn't changed much with the exception of time spent on DX. Most of my evening hours are spent on the backend of DX, I used to spend that time at the gym. My gym visits have been cut down from twice a day to once in the morning. :tempted

I didn't know you were from this area (CA anyways, I'm assuming)!?! I live in Seaside - I can hear Laguna Seca from my house. I was hoping to get in some track days when I moved out here a year and a half ago however it's tough for me to get away for a ride on a weekend let alone a whole day or two at a track.

Hope you get back on two wheels soon!!!

:cheers

hehe.. finally some time to answer the questions..

F50-GT.. yes Games workshop did make a Balrog miniature as part of their LOTR game series... the thing is huge.. towers over the one that I put pictures off..

if memory serves it stands about 6 inches high and has a wingspan of about 8 inches... I keep meaning to pick myself one up as its an awesome miniature... only problem is its about the same cost as a diecast so I never have the money :D

and Mike ... yeah sort of D&D style.. it comes under tabletop wargaming where you pit your army against a friends based on a points system (IE 2000 point game) where each miniature has a certain points cost as do their weapons etc.. so you pics the troops you want up to your points allocation.. (eg.. a tactical squad might be 200 points... the army general could be 150) depending on their armament and type of troop.. the better the troop.. the more it costs...

Space marines are considered the best in the game so points per troop runs about 35-50... where as the lowest troop in the game could be 6-7 points per model.

I've been living in the Bay Area since '81 (Marin then San Francisco) :cheers

Must be awesome to live so near Laguna: MotoGP & WSB round, oh yeah! :cheers

If you should ever get a chance to attend Laguna, I highly recommend doing it with the California Superbike School. They're pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. :cheers
