1:18s of 1:1s you most regret selling

Regrets, I’ve had a few.

That sums up not so much my car ownership, but the circumstances under which I’ve had to let cars go. So this is a thread in which to wallow over the 1:1 cars you had that you really loved; the cars that you’d have back again in a heartbeat if you could.

My two exist on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Alfa - so playful, exuberant, exhilarating, infuriating and brimming with brio - contrasts so much with the 190; calm, serene, silent, stable, unflappable and always on your side.

Both sit in that little place in your heart that only car fans have. I miss them both so much. What are yours?

2006 Subaru WRX STi

~280 WHP on a heartbreaker dyno, Cobb AP / Downpipe, SPT intake / exhaust, tons of Defi gauges, AEM wideband, nice audio system, effectively stock on the outside, but it was pretty minty.

I wanted something with a removable roof. Sold the STi, bought a C5. In hindsight I should have just bought an early C4 and kept the STi. Needless to say I'm actively saving for a WRX to supplement the C5 since an STi would be out of my budget, most likely. I'm eying an 11-14 hatch, but lets see what the future holds.

As far as 1/18s go, I sold off a pile of them about a decade ago when I thought I was done with them. Nothing "nice", mainly Maisto / Ertl. I wish I kept the Maisto Diablo and the E36 BMW 325i Convertible just because I dug them, but they're not great models and easy / cheap to find replacements if I wanted to.

I hate to be such a killjoy, but to me car ownership is nothing but a necessary burden. It's a drain on my finances, an extra source of stress. So, I never had any regrets selling any 1:1. Some, in fact, I regret not selling sooner...

I suppose I never really owned a car I really, really enjoyed owning.

As for 1:18, I'm more of a hoarder than a seller. There aren't any market places I'd feel really comfortable and secure selling my stuff, plus dealing with buyers would be like giving karmic retribution a warm welcome into my life...

I share the similar sentiment. I too think that car ownership is something of a liability in most cases unless it is a hobby car meant as collectable with good potential to appreciate in value. I only keep one daily driver myself to get me around and i don't change it often. The last car i had and remembers it fondly was a old E46. Had it for 6 years and the car always put a smile on my face each time I walk up towards it because I just love the styling so much but it gave me fair bit of headache over the years. Anything that can leaks leaked. And the oil burning issue just never go way glad to have sold it at the end.

I too also feel bit like hoarder at times and I struggle to draw a line between being a collector or hoarder. I want to keep the collection under certain number but it just keeps growing LOL. The number of sold models can't match the constant acquistions I made. I have quite a few instances of seller remorse and i think mainly due to them being sold cheap, or I want them again but they can be impossible to buy back at the price I sold. Namely CMC 901, LS Collectibles 944, HWE F12 Berlinetta in royal blue etc. I also kinda regret for getting rid of a Maisto Diablo SE30 in green. The model isn't good to be begin with but it is near impossible to find it in that particular shade of green though..

Hmm, interesting. I have to say that, as much as I love cars, there is an enormous relief in having one you don’t love too much; no stressing over where you park it, no fretting if you’ve washed it polished it as much as you want, no wondering what that strange noise it. Sometimes, it’s nice to just have the mobility a car provides, without having any sort of emotional attachment to it… with the grief that usually entails :)

I must be exceedingly easy on brakes in general.

My Tacoma is at just over 52,000 and the pads have plenty of meat on them. My last one got totaled at about 45,000 on the original brakes. My STi had 62,000 on it when I sold it and I was on the original rotors still. The big issue with the STi was the large Brembo calipers were aluminum and the mounting bolts stainless steel. Galvanic corrosion would fuse the bolts to the calipers and pull the softer aluminum threads. My options would have been 4x calipers @ $800 a pop or run helicoil / time serts.

My Vette is rapidly coming due for brakes, but I bought it at 73,000 and it's got 82,000 on it now. It has dopey cross drilled rotors I cannot wait to remove. I should paint the calipers while I'm in there as I loathe wild colored calipers on stock brakes on base model cars. If it had upgraded calipers or a factory big brake kit like the copper calipers on my STi, sure. These are just generic calipers that say "CORVETTE" on them and the PO painted them red poorly. I filled the letters to make it look closer ot the C5 Z06 part (which actually was identical to the base caliper) but I"d just assume have them gunmetal or black.

I have to say that despite being a "massive car guy" I often feel the same way as some of the comments I've just read about driving. Most of the time it bores me to tears! I absolutely hate motorway driving and find the standard of some peoples driving absolutely shocking. I don't even think some of them even have a driving licence. Certainly if the don't have an accident, they are the one causing it!!!

Haha! You don't live in Co. Donegal by any chance, do you? :ROFLMAO:

  • Sudden breaking
  • Tailgating
  • Ppl unable to keep the car straight on the road or at constant speed
  • No indication when turning
  • Ppl indicating left when passing by a t-junction, but then going straight on - very dangerous mistake if ppl at the end of the junction believe the eejit on the main road is going to make the turn...
  • Ppl bringing traffic behind to a halt just to make a turn
  • Ppl making lorry-style, wide left turns, in such way oncoming traffic need to slam on the brakes to avoid collision
  • Ppl on the left at roundabouts ignoring the rule that you have to give way to the traffic on the right
  • Imbeciles looking down on their phones when driving, to the point you have to get off the road to avoid a collision - had some very close calls with that
  • Dangerous overtaking, particularly around corners
  • Ppl stopping traffic for a chat - van, bus and truck drivers especially
  • Ppl with no notion of paralel parking - or any sort of parking for that matter
  • Ppl missing the green light, then finally waking up on the orange light, but still getting away and leaving you stuck on the red
  • Did I mention the "retired farmers", grocery shopping at 7 in the morning on their 1940's little grey Fergies, and 2 km down the line you wondering if there's been an accident or a traffic corps checkpoint?
Or in other words, all that lovely people living in blissful ignorance of the rules of the road.

And don't forget stupid pedestrians:
  • Crossing where they're not supposed to, with the zebra crossing only 2 metres away from them
  • Surprise-jumping right in front of you from behind parked trucks, buses, vans...
  • Suddenly appearing right behind your car, when you're reverse parking - happens a lot on parking lots...
  • People who cross the road diagonally, rather than, well, crossing to the other side... like the lady who just left the bank and then get on the road to cross to the other for the bingo, but the bingo is 200 metres away...

:cautious:

Haha, no, the closest motorway is London's car park!! The M25! Which is terrible!! The concrete slabs make it sound like you're just driving on the wheel rims & all of your tyres have come off! It's so loud!!!

Then we have those who drive along in a 30 at crawling pace, like not even in second gear! Those who use some main road like a race track, always a Golf R, an A45 AMG, or Audi S or RS models.
Plus middle lane hoggers.
